At Heaven on Earth, one of the most common questions I hear is: What order should I apply my skincare products in?
Updated May 2026
And the truth is, the order matters more than most people realize.
Even the best skincare products can underperform if they're layered incorrectly. Applying products in the proper sequence helps ingredients absorb better, prevents pilling, supports your skin barrier, and allows each product to do what it was designed to do.
The easiest way to remember skincare layering?
Apply products from thinnest to thickest.
Think lightweight, water-based products first and richer, more protective products last.
Whether your goal is glowing skin, hydration, anti-aging, acne support, or a stronger skin barrier, this esthetician-approved guide will help you build a routine that actually works.
The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products
Step 1: Cleanser | Morning + Night
Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin.
In the morning, cleansing removes overnight oil, sweat, and leftover skincare so your skin is fresh and prepped for the day ahead.
At night, cleansing becomes even more important. Throughout the day, your skin is exposed to invisible buildup including pollution, dust, dirt, oil, bacteria, sweat, SPF, and makeup. Even if you don't wear makeup or sunscreen, your skin still benefits from a double cleanse.
The first cleanse helps loosen and remove surface buildup, environmental pollutants, oil, and debris. The second cleanse is when you actually cleanse the skin itself.
Double cleansing can help:
- Support clearer pores
- Improve product absorption
- Remove buildup more thoroughly
- Support smoother skin texture over time
- Help reduce the dull, rough appearance that buildup can create
Pila’s Tip:
Your skin should never feel squeaky clean after washing. That tight feeling usually means your skin barrier has been stripped.
Step 2: Toner | Morning + Night
Toner is one of the most underused steps in skincare.
Applied immediately after cleansing, toner helps replenish hydration and prepares the skin for the products that follow. Well-formulated toners can also deliver supportive ingredients that help the skin feel more balanced, hydrated, and receptive to serums and moisturizers layered afterward.
Pila’s Tip:
Pat toner gently into the skin instead of wiping it away with a cotton pad. You want those ingredients staying on your skin, not soaking into the cotton.
Step 3: Serums | Morning + Night
Serums are where targeted correction happens.
Because serums are highly concentrated, they deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin than heavier creams or moisturizers.
This is where you address your biggest skincare concerns:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Loss of firmness
- Dark spots
- Dehydration
- Redness
- Uneven skin tone
Vitamin C serums are often used in the morning for antioxidant protection, while peptide, growth factor, retinol, or hydrating serums are commonly used at night.
Pila’s Tip:
Give your serum about 60 seconds to absorb before moving to the next step. Rushing through layering can reduce absorption and cause products to pill.
Step 4: Eye Cream | Morning + Night
The skin around your eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of your face, which is why eye products are formulated differently than traditional moisturizers.
A good eye cream can help support:
- Fine lines
- Puffiness
- Dryness
- Crepey texture
- Dark circles
Pila’s Tip:
Apply eye cream using your ring finger and the lightest touch possible. Tap gently, never drag or pull the skin.
STEP 5 — Moisturizer | AM + PM
Moisturizer helps replenish hydration, soften dry or dehydrated skin, and support the skin’s ability to retain moisture and protect itself from environmental stressors. Even oily skin benefits from moisturizer. When skin becomes dehydrated, it can often respond by producing more oil.
Pila’s tip:
Before moisturizer, apply one more light layer of toner so skin is slightly damp. Think of a dry sponge on the counter. It doesn't absorb a spill well until you dampen it first. Skin works similarly — slightly damp skin is more receptive to the products applied afterwards.

STEP 6 — SPF | Every Morning + Reapplication Throughout the Day
If you do nothing else for anti-aging, wear sunscreen every day.
SPF is the final step in your morning skincare routine because it helps protect skin from UV damage, pigmentation, collagen breakdown, and premature aging.
And in Aspen, sunscreen matters even more. Higher altitude means stronger UV exposure year-round — even in winter and even on cloudy days.
Daily sunscreen use helps protect against premature aging, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, collagen loss, and skin cancer risk.
Pila's Tip:
Reapplying SPF before getting in the car to drive home is one of the most overlooked ways to help protect skin from cumulative sun exposure and premature aging. Most people remember sunscreen at the pool or beach, but the daily UV exposure you get through the windshield and driver’s side window over time can easily add up to more sun exposure than a two-week vacation.
Also apply SPF to the backs of your hands. They're often one of the first places to show visible sun damage because they are so frequently missed.
Where Does Exfoliation Go in Your Routine?
For most people, exfoliating 2–3 times per week is enough.
Exfoliation should happen after cleansing and before toner.
This is one of the skincare steps people tend to do most incorrectly — either too much, too little, or not at all. When done properly, exfoliation helps remove dead skin buildup that can leave skin looking dull, feel rough, congest pores, and prevent skincare products from absorbing as effectively.
It can also help makeup apply more smoothly and give skin a brighter, more refined appearance overall.
But over-exfoliating can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to irritation, redness, sensitivity, and inflammation.
When exfoliation is used appropriately for your skin type and at the right frequency, it can make one of the most visible differences in the overall look and feel of your skin.
Common Skincare Layering Mistakes to Avoid
Applying Thick Products Too Early
Heavier creams can block lighter serums from penetrating properly.
Using Too Many Active Ingredients
More doesn't always mean better. Over-layering acids, retinol, and exfoliants can overwhelm the skin barrier.
Not Allowing Products to Absorb
Give each layer a little time before applying the next product.
Skipping Moisturizer Because Your Skin Is Oily
Oily skin still needs hydration and barrier support.
Using SPF Only on Sunny Days
UV damage happens year-round — even in winter.
The Best Skincare Routine Is the One That Fits Your Skin
There's no one-size-fits-all skincare routine.
The right routine depends on your skin type, skin barrier health, lifestyle, climate, age, and goals.
What works for someone else on TikTok may not work for your skin.
That is why personalized skincare matters.
