Aspen may be famous for skiing, but you don't need a pair of skis to fall in love with this town.
I haven't skied in more than 17 years. That may be slightly sacrilegious to admit when you live in Aspen, but there are a few of us locals who don't ski.
The good news is there's plenty to do here without ever stepping into a pair of ski boots. So if skiing isn't on your Aspen itinerary, you're in good company. Here are some of the things I recommend to my spa guests who are looking for ways to enjoy Aspen off the mountain.
Visit the Aspen Art Museum
The Aspen Art Museum is right in downtown Aspen, admission is free, and the exhibitions change throughout the year, so there's usually something new to see.
While you're there, Swedish Hill on the third floor is one of my favorite places for lunch. I used to think it was a bit of a secret spot until I discovered it's not so secret after all. It's small and there isn't a lot of seating, so I like to go for an early or late lunch instead. My favorite is the trio of salads.
Take a Walk Through the John Denver Sanctuary
If you like being outdoors and have an hour or so to fill, the John Denver Sanctuary is an easy walk from downtown, just two blocks past Main Street. I often recommend it to guests who are looking for something to do while their friend is with me having a facial or massage.
The sanctuary itself is quite small, but it's peaceful in the winter with the snow, river rocks and the Roaring Fork nearby. Large stones are engraved with John Denver's lyrics, and you may even spot a few ducks as you walk in.
If you want to keep going, you can connect with the Rio Grande Trail and turn it into a longer walk.
Hike Smuggler Mountain
If you want something a little more active, Smuggler Mountain is one of Aspen's most popular local hikes. The road climbs steadily uphill, with a great view back over Aspen.
I tend to stay away from it because, as a local, you'll run into too many people you know. But if you're visiting Aspen, that's obviously not a problem.
Do dress in layers. Even on a cold winter day, you'll probably want to take one or two off as you make your way uphill. Check the weather before you go, and don't forget sunscreen. A beautiful, sunny Aspen day can still be very cold.

Ride the Gondola Without Skis
You don't have to ski to go to the top of Aspen Mountain. Non-skiers can buy a sightseeing ticket for the Silver Queen Gondola and ride to the top for lunch at the Sundeck.
You can meet up with friends who are skiing for lunch and still get some time on the mountain without ever putting on a pair of ski boots.
You can also do a snowshoe tour at the top, and personally, I find snowshoes more annoying than helpful and would rather just wear my boots.
Wander Around Downtown Aspen
One of the most fun ways to spend a winter afternoon in Aspen is simply walking around town, ducking in and out of the shops. Of course, there's Gucci, Prada and all of that, but some of my favorites are the smaller, locally owned stores.
I love 419, owned by Kristin and Kelly, because they carry clothes, jewelry and art you don't see everywhere else. Remember when part of the fun of shopping while you were traveling was discovering brands you'd never heard of? 419 may be that store for you.
Mischief Vintage is a new addition to Aspen this summer, with one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces and vintage finds. I found a great pair of vintage Levi's 501s there.
For those who can get lost in a bookstore, there's Explore Booksellers on Main Street, housed in a charming old Victorian. Upstairs, you'll also find a little bistro where you can get a coffee to enjoy while you're browsing, or stay for lunch.
See Who's Playing at Belly Up
Definitely check the schedule at Belly Up while you're in town. It's a small, intimate venue, and wherever you are, you're incredibly close to the stage.
Melissa Etheridge and Thievery Corporation both played there this summer, just to give you an idea. Seeing one of your favorite artists that close is pretty hard to beat.
Have a Spa Day
Aspen can make you feel like you should always be doing something: hiking, skiing, shopping, going somewhere.
You don't have to.
Book a massage. Have a facial. Give yourself an hour or two when there is nowhere else you need to be.
It may end up being the best part of your vacation.
