If your favorite Korean sunscreen suddenly looks different, you're not the only one noticing.

How Korea and the U.S. Regulate Sunscreen Differently
In Korea, products that protect the skin from UV rays are regulated as functional cosmetics by Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), with standards and testing for SPF and PA ratings.
The United States takes a different approach. Here, sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug.
A Korean sunscreen can't simply arrive in the U.S. with its Korean SPF rating and automatically be marketed with the same claims. To be marketed as an OTC sunscreen here, it has to meet applicable U.S. requirements for permitted sunscreen active ingredients, testing and labeling.
That's where the differences between the two systems become important.
Why Does the U.S. Have Fewer Sunscreen Filters?
The U.S. has historically had a much smaller and older list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients than many other countries. As a result, some newer UV filters commonly used in Korean, Asian and European sunscreens aren't currently permitted as active ingredients in U.S. OTC sunscreens.
That difference is regulatory. It shouldn't be interpreted as a ranking of Korean versus American sunscreen, or as evidence that an internationally used UV filter is unsafe simply because it isn't on the U.S. list.
For a new UV filter to become a permitted OTC sunscreen active in the United States, it has to go through the FDA's regulatory process and meet the applicable requirements for safety and effectiveness.
Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S) shows how different the timelines can be. It has been used internationally in sunscreen products since 2000, but wasn't added to the U.S. OTC sunscreen monograph until June 2026. It was the first new sunscreen active ingredient added to the U.S. system in decades.

A modern filter primarily used for UVB protection.
Bisoctrizole (Tinosorb M)
Listed as Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, this filter provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.
Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone (Uvasorb HEB)
A modern UV filter used in international sunscreen formulations.

That's why you'll still see an SPF designation on KrX Sunblocker even as the labeling on some other Korean sun care products changes.
Pfect-A and KrX are both Korean sun care products. They simply have different regulatory status and labeling in the United States.
What Does This Mean for K-Beauty Sunscreen Lovers?
The qualities that made K-Beauty sun care so popular haven't disappeared because U.S. labels are changing.
Korean formulas helped raise expectations for what daily sun care could feel like: thinner textures, modern UV filters and formulas that work beautifully with the rest of a skincare routine.
What's changing for some products is their U.S. regulatory status and labeling. When a familiar product suddenly looks different, find out whether the formula actually changed before assuming that it did.
What Should You Look for When Buying Korean Sunscreen in the U.S.?
When you specifically want a sunscreen marketed under U.S. FDA requirements, look for an SPF designation, Broad Spectrum labeling when applicable, active sunscreen ingredients and a Drug Facts panel.
When a Korean sun care product doesn't carry those U.S. sunscreen claims, don't assume an SPF rating from another country automatically applies to its U.S. labeling.
Look at the specific product, its formula and its current U.S. label.
